For one semester, work one on one as a tutor and friend to a student in the PMD (Profoundly Mentally Disable) class.
Regular education students interested in helping and socializing with their peers with special needs are scheduled as Peer Tutors for one semester. They are scheduled into PMS Peer Tutoring instead of a Wheel or P. E. class. (However, they must take one semester of P.E. per year.) This opportunity is available for all grade levels as long as it fits within their schedule and can be repeated.
Peer Tutors work one on one with each ASD student and are taught how to help each MID student meet his/her individual needs. They are supervised and supported by the ASD teacher and Assistant. Peer Tutors are graded based on their participation. They receive up to 5 points per day for being on time, completing the paper work, cleaning materials from their work area, following directions and helping their ASD or MID student. If a Peer Tutor has an excused absence, that day's points are not included in the average. Each class period has 3 to 4 Peer Tutors enrolled.
Peer Tutors are a wonderful asset and we have had many talented, caring Rock Lake students help their peers with disabilities. The main goal of the Peer Tutor program is to develop friendships and for all students to benefit from a mutual caring for each other.
Applications are now available in guidance or room 318. Please contact
Ms. Heers or Ms. Golubock for any questions. |
